Nigeria leads Africa in startup equity funding, raises $214m in H1 2026

Nigeria has taken the lead among African startup markets for equity funding in the first half of 2026, with startups in the country raising $214 million between January and June.

The figure, contained in data from funding analytics platform Africa: The Big Deal, puts Nigeria ahead of every other major startup ecosystem on the continent during the period.

Egypt followed with $183 million, leaving Nigeria with a nearly 17% lead. South Africa ranked third with $66 million, while Kenya recorded $46 million in equity funding.

Nigeria’s $214 million haul was therefore more than three times South Africa’s total and nearly five times Kenya’s. The country’s equity funding was 224% higher than South Africa’s and 365% above Kenya’s.

The strong showing comes as African startup funding continues to recover from the slowdown that followed the global venture capital downturn. Nigeria, in particular, appears to be regaining momentum after a subdued 2025.

Across equity, debt and grants, Nigerian startups raised $254 million in the first six months of 2026. That puts the country within striking distance of its full-year 2024 total, when startups raised $410 million.

The pace also marks a notable improvement from 2025, when Nigerian startups raised $343 million for the entire year. If the current trajectory holds, the country could surpass last year’s total before the end of 2026 and potentially exceed its 2024 funding record.

The latest figures reinforce Nigeria’s position as one of Africa’s most important startup investment markets, with its large consumer market, growing technology ecosystem and concentration of venture-backed companies continuing to attract capital.
